RELEASE: Democrats Serve PAC endorses eight new candidates in competitive House races

Highlighting their public service backgrounds, the national organization plans to actively support today’s endorsees – Sabrina Bousbar (FL-13), Missy Cotter Smasal (VA-02), Sam Eppler (TX-24), Ron Harris (MN-03), Kristen McDonald Rivet (MI-08), Joel Rubin (MD-06), Brianna Sewell (VA-07), and Brian Williams (TX-32) – in their 2024 elections.

Washington, DC (Jan. 30, 2024) — Today, Democrats Serve, a national organization supporting Democrats with public service backgrounds, announced the endorsement of eight new candidates in competitive House races in 2024.

Brett Broesder, the organization’s founder and executive director, noted that all eight candidates receiving an endorsement today have first-hand experience as public service professionals.

“For frontline public service pros, strengthening their communities isn’t just a job; it’s a way of life,” said Broesder. “That’s why Democrats Serve is proud to support these eight public service Democrats running in competitive races. We plan to ensure each candidate has the necessary support and resources to win.”

The eight new House candidates being endorsed today include:

  • Sabrina Bousbar (FL-13): Former Senior Advisor for the Administration of Strategic Preparedness and Response at the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.

  • Missy Cotter Smasal (VA-02): Former Surface Warfare Officer in the U.S. Navy. 

  • Sam Eppler (TX-24): High School Principal and Former Teacher.

  • Ron Harris (MN-03): Former Chief Resilience Officer for the City of Minneapolis, MN.

  • Kristen McDonald Rivet (MI-08): Former Chief of Staff at Michigan’s Department of Education.

  • Joel Rubin (MD-06): Former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Legislative Affairs at the U.S. Department of State.

  • Briana Sewell (VA-07): Former Congressional Aide.

  • Brian Williams (TX-32): Trauma Surgeon and U.S. Air Force (USAF) Veteran. 

For the 2024 elections, the group has made endorsements nationwide, including: U.S. Senate Candidates: Angela Alsobrooks (MD) and Lisa Blunt Rochester (DE); Incumbent House Democrats: Yadira Caraveo (CO-03), Jasmine Crockett (TX-30), and Val Foushee (NC-04); and U.S. House Candidates: Gil Cisneros (CA-31), Adam Gray (CA-13), Dave Min (CA-47), Jessica Morse (CA-03), Jirair Ratevosian (CA-30), Josh Riley (NY-19), Mike Rogers (MD-03), Will Rollins (CA-41), Rudy Salas (CA-22), Derek Tran (CA-45) and Tony Vargas (NE-02).

Democrats Serve’s overall national effort consists of recruiting, training, and supporting Democrats with backgrounds serving communities in government, including educators, police officers, firefighters, first responders, social workers, judges, prosecutors, public defenders, public health nurses, and more.
