STATEMENT: Democrats Serve PAC applauds Gabe Amo’s Victory in RI-01

Milford, Connecticut (Nov. 7, 2023) — Tonight, Democrat Gabe Amo won the Special General Election in Rhode Island’s 1st Congressional District (RI-01) to fill David Cicilline’s vacated seat.

In response to Amo’s victory, Democrats Serve’s founding executive director, Brett Broesder, made the following statement:

“For Gabe Amo, public service isn’t just a job, it’s a way of life. Amo’s experience as a public service pro—from the Rhode Island State House to the White House—makes him uniquely well-positioned to deliver for Rhode Island in the nation’s capital. Democrats Serve is proud to have supported Gabe’s congressional run from start-to-finish, and we look forward to continuing to do so in the future.”

Amo, who grew up in Pawtucket and went on to work for then-Governor Gina Raimondo in the Rhode Island State House followed by President’s Obama and Biden in the White House, became the Democratic nominee after defeating nearly one-dozen opponents in the RI-01 Special Primary Election held on—the day after Labor Day—September 5, 2023.

Amo won tonight’s Special General Election by defeating Republican Gerry Leonard.

Democrats Serve PAC first encouraged Amo to run in mid-March 2023 (Politico, 3/14/2023). And, after Amo officially launched his campaign, the organization served as the first to publicly endorse Amo’s candidacy (Democratsserve.org, 4/23/2023).

During the Special Primary Election, of the nearly $1.6 million spent by outside groups (WPRI.com, 11/4/2023), Democrats Serve was the only outside group to spend significantly in support of Amo via independent expenditure (IE).

In advance of tonight’s Special General Election, the organization spent $25,000 via IE on cable TV ads supporting Amo.
