RELEASE: Democrats Serve PAC endorses 12 new U.S. Senate and House candidates

Highlighting their public service backgrounds, the national group plans to actively support today’s 12 endorsees–including three new U.S. Senate and nine new U.S. House candidates–in 2024.

Washington, DC (March 13, 2024) — Today, Democrats Serve—a national organization supporting Democrats with public service backgrounds—announced the endorsement of 12 new candidates running in competitive elections nationwide.

Brett Broesder, the organization’s founder and executive director, noted that all 12 candidates receiving an endorsement today have first-hand experience as public service professionals.

“For frontline public service pros, strengthening their communities isn’t just a job; it’s a way of life,” said Broesder. “That’s why Democrats Serve proudly supports these 12 public service Democrats running competitive races nationwide. We’ll actively work to ensure each of these candidates has the necessary support and resources to win in 2024.”

The 12 new candidates that Democrats Serve PAC is endorsing today include:

U.S. Senate Candidates: 

  • Colin Allred (TX): Former Department of Housing and Urban Development official in the General Counsel's office at the Department of Housing and Urban Development during the Obama Administration.

  • Katrina Christiansen (ND): Professor and former faculty at Iowa State University.

  • Adam Schiff (CA): Former Los Angeles, CA-based federal prosecutor and professor at Glendale Community College. 

U.S. House Candidates:

  • Sue Altman (NJ-07):  Former teacher and high school basketball coach. 

  • Lanon Baccam (IA-03): Former U.S. Department of Agriculture official and veteran.

  • Christina Bohannan (IA-01): Former clerk for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit and as a law professor at the University of Iowa.

  • Ashley Ehasz (PA-01): U.S. Army veteran and Apache helicopter pilot.

  • Shomari Figures (AL-02): Former White House aide, congressional staffer, and Deputy Chief of Staff and Counselor to the Attorney General at the U.S. Department of Justice.

  • Hilary Franz (WA-06): Former law clerk for federal and state court judges.

  • Johnny Olszewski Jr. (MD-02): Former civics teacher in Baltimore County Public Schools.

  • Amish Shah (AZ-01): Former sport medicine fellow at the University of Arizona.

  • Joe Vogel (MD-06): Former congressional staffer.

For the 2024 elections, the group has made endorsements in federal races nationwide, including: U.S. Senate Candidates (2): Angela Alsobrooks (MD) and Lisa Blunt Rochester (DE); Incumbent House Democrats (3): Yadira Caraveo (CO-03), Jasmine Crockett (TX-30), and Val Foushee (NC-04); and U.S. House Candidates (19): Sabrina Bousbar (FL-13), Gil Cisneros (CA-31), Sam Eppler (TX-24), Adam Gray (CA-13), Ron Harris (MN-03), Sam Liccardo (CA-16), Michelle Maldonado (VA-10), John Mannion (NY-22), Dave Min (CA-47), Jessica Morse (CA-03), Josh Riley (NY-19), Kristen McDoanld Rivet (MI-08), Mike Rogers (MD-03), Will Rollins (CA-41), Rudy Salas (CA-22), Briana Sewell (VA-07), Missy Cotter Smasal (VA-02), Derek Tran (CA-45); and Tony Vargas (NE-02).

In state and local races, the organization has also made endorsements nationwide in 2024, including: State House Candidate (1): Derek Hawn (TN HD-41); Board of Commissioners Candidate (1): Wesley Wheless (Franklin County, NC); and County Commission Candidate (1): Hunter Cain (Clark County, NV).

Democrats Serve’s overall national effort consists of recruiting, training, and supporting Democrats with backgrounds serving communities in government, including educators, police officers, firefighters, first responders, social workers, judges, prosecutors, public defenders, public health nurses, and more.
