Democrats Serve endorses Hayes (CT-05)

Highlighting her frontline public service background as an educator, and with news of a potential Republican challenger, a new Connecticut-based national organization announces plans to support Hayes in her re-election bid.

Milford, CT (July 21, 2021) – This week, Democrats Serve — a new national political action committee (PAC) supporting Democrats running for office with frontline public service backgrounds — announced its endorsement of Congresswoman Jahana Hayes (CT-05) in her re-election bid.

Brett Broesder, the PACs executive director, noted that Hayes — a former public school history teacher and national teacher of the year award recipient — is an excellent example of a Democrat running for office, with a frontline public service experience, who excels as a candidate and a policymaker.

“For a frontline public service pro like Jahana Hayes, strengthening her community isn’t just a job; it’s a way of life,” said Broesder. “Her experience as a frontline worker provides her with first-hand expertise in tackling the toughest challenges our communities face today. That’s why Democrats Serve, with an aim of helping to ensure she has the support and resources necessary to win re-election, is proud to officially endorse her candidacy.”

Hayes is one of more than a dozen incumbent House Democrats representing competitive districts, which Democrats Serve is endorsing this week. Others include Representatives Tom O'Halleran (AZ-01), Carolyn Bourdeaux (GA-07), Lauren Underwood (IL-14), Elissa Slotkin (MI-08), Andy Kim (NJ-03), Tom Malinowski (NJ-07), Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11), Conor Lamb (PA-17), Susan Wild (PA-07), Abigail Spanberger (VA-07), Ron Kind (WI-03), and Katie Porter (CA-45). Safeguarding all of these seats in the 2022 midterm elections will be critical to helping Democrats maintain a majority in the 118th Congress.

Broesder also said the group is making a concerted effort to support and recruit diverse candidates with frontline public service backgrounds, including teachers and police officers.

“Republicans in Washington are turning their backs on law enforcement by opposing bipartisan investigations into what role politics played in allowing insurrectionists to kill a Capitol Police officer,” said Broesder. “Republicans have made their priorities clear: appeasing right-wing extremists trumps law and order. America deserves better. That’s why re-electing the Democrats we’re endorsing today, who know first-hand what it means to serve their communities in government, is critical to safeguarding our democracy.”

Democrats Serve’s overall national effort consists of recruiting, training, and supporting Democrats with backgrounds serving communities in government — at the federal, state, and local levels — including teachers, police officers, firefighters, first responders, social workers, judges, prosecutors, public defenders, public health nurses, and more.

Since officially launching less than two months ago, the PAC has made endorsements nationwide in competitive elections, including Eric Adams for New York City Mayor (NY), Val Demings for U.S. Senate (FL), Cheri Beasley for U.S. Senate (NC), and Katie Hobbs for Governor (AZ).

All 13 Members of Congress endorsed by Democrats Serve this week are also part of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s (DCCC) 2022 Frontline Program. The program, which includes 32 incumbents total for the 2022 election cycle, aims to provide incumbent Democrats in potentially competitive seats the resources to execute effective re-election campaigns.
