RELEASE: Democrats Serve PAC endorses Gabe Amo for Congress (RI-01)

Highlighting his background as a frontline public service pro, the national organization plans to actively support Amo’s congressional bid in Rhode Island’s 1st district.

Milford, Conn. (April 24, 2023) — Today, Democrats Serve, a national hybrid political action committee (PAC) that helps public service Democrats run for office and win, announced an endorsement of Gabe Amo’s congressional bid in Rhode Island’s 1st District.

Brett Broesder, the PAC’s executive director, stated that Gabe Amo’s public service background — serving as an aide to President Biden, President Obama, and Governor Gina Raimondo — makes him an excellent example of a Democrat running for office who can excel as a candidate and policymaker.

“From the Rhode Island State House to the White House, Gabe’s commitment to public service is second to none,” said Broesder. “He has a proven track record of fighting for Ocean State families and getting results. That’s why Democrats Serve is excited to support his congressional bid.”

Gabe Amo noted that he’s thrilled to receive Democrats Serve’s endorsement.

“My career as a public service pro has provided a true sense of purpose and mission,” said Amo. “And as a native Rhode Islander, I know first-hand the struggle families face in the 1st Congressional District. In Congress, I’ll put my experiences to work for Ocean Staters while fighting for an assault weapons ban, leading the charge for corporate accountability, and beating back attempts to cut Social Security and Medicare benefits.”

Congressman David Cicilline announced in February that he would retire to lead a nonprofit, the Rhode Island Foundation, resulting in a special primary election that will take place on September 5, 2023. The special general election is scheduled for November 7, 2023.

Rhode Island’s 1st Congressional District consists mainly of the eastern part of the smallest state in the country, including Pawtucket, Newport, and parts of Providence. It’s a heavily Democratic district where President Biden won by nearly 30 points in 2020 (Biden 63.5% - Trump 34.5%).

Democrats Serve supported several Ocean State-based candidates in 2022, including Seth Magaziner, Val Lawson, Joe Shekarchi, and Xaykham “Xay” Khamsyvoravong.

The organization’s overall national effort consists of recruiting, training, and supporting Democrats with backgrounds serving communities in government, including educators, police officers, firefighters, first responders, social workers, judges, prosecutors, public defenders, public health nurses, and more.
