STATEMENT: Democrats Serve on the disclaimer in an ad supporting Stefan Pryor for RI State Treasurer

Milford, Connecticut (August 19, 2022) Background: This week, Democrats Serve — a national organization supporting Democrats running for office with public service backgrounds — launched a TV ad supporting longtime public service pro Stefan Pryor in his run for Rhode Island state treasurer.

To clarify why the organization’s Top 5 overall donors are mentioned in the disclaimer at the end of the ad — some of whom have either not voiced an opinion on this particular race or are actively supporting other candidates running for the same office — Democrats Serve’s Executive Director Brett Broesder made the following statement:

“In Rhode Island, Democrats Serve is proud to support Stefan Pryor — a longtime public service pro — who is running for state treasurer. Our effort supporting his candidacy includes running a TV ad, which is up on the airwaves statewide.

“The end of this TV ad (‘Wallet’) includes a small disclaimer at the bottom featuring Democrats Serve’s top 5 donors, required by state law, and features our national organization’s top 5 overall generous contributors. Therefore, although they’re mentioned in the disclaimer of this particular advertisement, it does not constitute an endorsement of — or support for — the advertisement or Stefan’s candidacy.

“To be clear: the National Education Association — and others listed on the disclaimer (except for Build New England Fund) — have not contributed to Democrats Serve for the purposes of supporting Stefan Pryor. In complying with the Ocean State’s election law requirements, we apologize for any confusion on this front.”
