Democrats Serve Endorses Bohannan (IA-01)

Highlighting her background as a frontline public service pro, new national organization plans to actively support Christina Bohannan in her run for Iowa’s 1st District congressional seat.

Milford, Conn. (December 8, 2021) – Today, Democrats Serve — a national hybrid political action committee (PAC) that supports Democrats running for office with public service backgrounds — is endorsing Christina Bohannan (IA-01) in her bid to unseat Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks, currently in Iowa’s 2nd District congressional seat.

Brett Broesder, the PAC’s executive director, noted that Christina Bohannan — who is a professor at the University of Iowa — is an excellent example of a Democrat running for office, with frontline public service experience, who can excel as a candidate and a policymaker.

“Christina Bohannan knows public service,” said Broesder. “For her, standing up for Iowa families isn’t just a job; it’s a way of life. Her experience as a frontline public service pro provides her with first-hand expertise in tackling the toughest challenges our communities face today. That’s why Democrats Serve, with an aim of helping to ensure they have the support and resources necessary to win, is proud to officially endorse her candidacy.”

Christina Bohannan, who in addition to being a professor is a sitting state representative, states that she’s thrilled to receive Democrats Serve’s endorsement.

“As an educator and state Representative,” said Christina Bohannan, “I have devoted my life to public service, and I appreciate the support of Democrats Serve as I take the next step, running for Congress in Iowa’s new 1st District. When elected, I will fight hard for communities in Southeastern Iowa, and for working-class families like the one I grew up in. I believe that everyone who works hard deserves a fair shot to get ahead.”

Democrats Serve works to support public service candidates, who often lack access to the wealthy donor networks that non-working class candidates do.

After launching in May, the organization endorsed 28 candidates nationwide who were running for state and local office in 2021. Every single candidate endorsed by the group won their respective elections.

For the 2022 midterms, the PAC has made endorsements nationwide in competitive elections, including: U.S. Senate Candidates Val Demings (FL), Cheri Beasley (NC); U.S. House Candidates Aramis Ayala (FL-10), Matt Castelli (NY-21), Tony Vargas (NE-2), Ruben Ramirez (TX-15); Incumbent House Democrats Carolyn Bourdeaux (GA-07), Lauren Underwood (IL-14), Elissa Slotkin (MI-08), Andy Kim (NJ-03), Tom Malinowski (NJ-07), Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11), Susan Wild (PA-07), Abigail Spanberger (VA-07), Jahana Hayes (CT-05), Tom O'Halleran (AZ-01), Katie Porter (CA-45); and Gubernatorial Candidate Katie Hobbs (AZ).

Broesder also said that the group is making a concerted effort to recruit diverse candidates with public safety and justice system experience.

“Republicans have made their priorities clear: appeasing right-wing extremists trumps law and order,” said Broesder. “America deserves better. That’s why electing Democrats like Bohannan, who know first-hand what it means to serve their communities in government, is critical to safeguarding our democracy.”

Democrats Serve’s overall national effort consists of recruiting, training, and supporting Democrats with backgrounds serving communities in government — at the federal, state, and local levels — including teachers, police officers, firefighters, first responders, social workers, judges, prosecutors, public defenders, public health nurses, and more.
